The sneaky ingredients hiding in everyday face creams — and why your skin might be getting worse, not better.

Imagine this: you wake up with dry, tight skin. So you reach for a moisturiser — a good one, an expensive one, maybe one that says "nourishing" right on the label. A week later, new pimples. You blame your diet, your water, your hormones. You probably never blame the cream.
But here is the uncomfortable truth: some of the most popular ingredients in mainstream face moisturisers can clog your pores and make acne actively worse. Not because the product is bad quality. But because those ingredients are simply not right for your skin type — especially if yours is dry and acne-prone at the same time.
This is not a scary article meant to make you throw out everything in your bathroom. Think of it as learning to read the ingredient list on your product the way you would read nutrition labels on food — so you know what you are actually putting on your skin.
First: What is a "Comedogenic" Ingredient?
"Comedogenic" is just a fancy word for: this ingredient clogs pores. The word comes from comedone — the medical name for a blocked pore. Open comedones are blackheads. Closed ones become whiteheads. When those get inflamed? That is the red, painful pimple most of us know too well.
Back in the 1970s, two American dermatologists — Dr. Albert Kligman and Dr. James Fulton — started testing cosmetic ingredients to see which ones caused pore blockages. They built a scale from 0 to 5. Zero means the ingredient will not clog your pores. Five means it very likely will.
Kligman and Fulton's comedogenicity work was published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology (1984) and the Journal of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists (1989). Is the scale perfect? No. The original tests were done on rabbit ears, which react more sensitively than human skin. Some ingredients score high in lab tests but behave differently on real human faces. The scale also is not standardised across different labs, which is why you sometimes see slightly different numbers in different sources.
But here is what still holds true: if an ingredient consistently scores 4 or 5 across multiple studies — and it appears in the top half of a product's ingredient list — it is a real risk for acne-prone skin. The scale gives you a useful direction, even if it is not a perfect map.
Ingredients are always listed from highest to lowest concentration. If a problematic ingredient is in positions 1–5, it is present in large amounts. If it appears near the very bottom of a long list, the quantity is likely tiny. Position matters as much as presence.
Why Acne-Prone Skin Already Has a Problem — Before You Put Anything On It
Here is something most people do not know: acne-prone skin has a weaker skin barrier than clear skin. The skin barrier is like a brick wall — your skin cells are the bricks, and a special kind of fat called ceramides is the mortar holding them together. This barrier keeps moisture inside your skin and keeps bacteria and irritants out.
People with acne-prone skin naturally have fewer ceramides. Because of this, their skin loses water faster — dermatologists call this transepidermal water loss, or TEWL. This is why acne-prone skin can feel dry and dehydrated even when it looks oily on the surface. It is not a contradiction. It is two problems happening at the same time.
A study comparing 36 males with mild-to-moderate acne against 29 without found that acne skin had significantly higher water loss (TEWL) and lower hydration. A separate PubMed study using specialised lab tools confirmed that acne-affected skin carries notably lower ceramide levels than healthy skin — particularly certain ceramide subtypes — and that this gets worse in winter. So what this means for your moisturiser: dumping a thick, heavy cream on top of acne-prone skin does not fix the real problem. Your skin needs ingredients that rebuild the barrier from within — especially ceramides. And the last thing it needs is a cream that blocks pores on top of an already-struggling barrier. That is a recipe for more breakouts, not fewer.

"Natural" Does Not Mean Safe for Your Pores
If there is one thing this list makes clear: coconut oil, cocoa butter, lanolin, wheat germ oil, and algae extract are all natural. And they are all problematic for acne-prone facial skin.
The reason comes down to a type of fat called oleic acid. Oils and butters that are high in oleic acid tend to be more pore-clogging for acne-prone skin. This is because acne-prone skin is already low in a balancing fatty acid called linoleic acid inside the follicle — and applying more oleic acid makes that imbalance worse. It is not a natural-versus-synthetic problem. It is a chemistry problem.
Research published in Mediators of Inflammation (Ottaviani et al., 2010) showed that acne-prone skin has measurably different sebum — lower in linoleic acid. Applying oleic-acid-dominant oils (like olive, almond, wheat germ) topically may worsen this imbalance and contribute to comedone formation. Read the study →
Linoleic-acid-rich oils — like rosehip, hemp seed, and evening primrose — are generally better tolerated by acne-prone skin for the opposite reason: they can help restore that balance rather than push it further out.
Shea Butter vs. Mango Butter — If Your Skin is Dry and Acne-Prone, This One Matters
If you have dry, acne-prone skin, you have probably been recommended shea butter at some point. It is in almost every nourishing cream, every dry-skin formula, every "sensitive skin" product on the market. So let us actually look at it honestly — and compare it to mango butter, which is a significantly smarter choice for your specific skin situation.

If your skin is dry and acne-prone, here is what a genuinely good night cream should have — and what it should not.
Look for ceramides — Ceramide NP, Ceramide AP, or Ceramide EOP. These rebuild the barrier from within. They address the root ceramide deficiency in acne-prone skin. Rating: 0.
Look for squalane — a plant-derived emollient that mirrors what your own skin produces. Absorbs clean, no greasy residue. Rating: 0–1.
Look for jojoba oil — technically a wax, structurally similar to human sebum. Balances without disrupting. Rating: 0–2.

Avoid isopropyl anything high up the list — Isopropyl Myristate and Isopropyl Palmitate are red flags.
